Will Lunt organized a training session for the Skene Lab with Daniela Bultoc and Ana Faro from Imperial’s own People and Organisational Development team. The training session focused on improving our presentation skills.

Connectome is a yearly conference for all members of the UK DRI network, and this year it took place in Brighton. The lab travelled to Brighton together on Wednesday 2 to join the ECR Day which included multiple sessions on leadership, careers, and science.

The lab went to have delicious pizza at Scale Space (White City) conveniently located right by the Sir Michael Uren Hub. We got to enjoy the beautiful weather and good company whilst socializing with each other.

We are delighted to announce the publication of MungeSumstats, a Bioconductor R package for the standardisation and quality control of many GWAS summary statistics in Bioinformatics. The package was developed in the group by Alan Murphy, Brian Schilder and Nathan Skene to address the disparity across how the results of GWAS are stored and shared.

Alan Murphy started at Skene’s Lab first as a Research Assistant in January 2021. Now, Alan has embarked on his journey as a PhD student under the supervision of Dr Nathan Skene.

Alan Murphy has just joined the lab as a researhc assistant! Alan has a background in data analytics and machine learning, as he did his undergraduate degree in the statistics department of Trinity College Dublin.

Kitty Murphy has now joined the lab as a PhD student! Kitty will work under the supervision of both Dr Nathan Skene and Dr Sarah Marzi. Warm welcome to Kitty!

Di Hu has joined the neurogenomics lab this week! She did her PhD at the University of Oxford as a Clarendon Scholar in the laboratory of Professor Shankar Srinivas. There she investigated how transcription factor ETS2 may act as either an oncogene or tumour suppressor, using a combination of single-cell RNA-sequencing, FACS, high resolution fixed and live imaging, ex vivo pharmacological culture, and in vivo CRISPR genetics.

We’re happy to announce that Nathan has received a Future Leaders Fellowship from the UKRI! This award will provide £1.5million in funding for the lab over the next four years. It will enable us leverage genetics to drive towards answers to simple questions about brain disorders: where they occur, when the genetic effects act, and how genetic risk affects particular cell types.

Maria Tsalenchuk has just joined the lab as a PhD student! She will work under the supervision of Dr Sarah Marzi. Maria’s project will aim to elucidate the biochemical mechanisms underlying the cause of Parkinson’s Disease.
